Long hailed as an audiophile s label, Mercury represents an important milestone in the history of classical recordings

As The New York Times described, "One feels oneself in the living presence of the orchestra"

60 years after the landmark first recording, Mercury Living Presence: The Collector s Edition celebrates this special anniversary

Mercury Living Presence is special in many ways - an American company, from the heyday of classical recording in the U.S., that reproduced some of the most sonically realistic recordings at the dawn of the stereo era. Precious few stereo LPs were pressed when these recordings were issued, and they became some of the rarest, most collectible classical discs ever. Mercury Living Presence continues to enjoy a special reputation as one of the most enterprising, prestigious and sonically-spectacular labels in the history of classical recording.

Some of these recording have been available on CD and on SACD. However, many are now deleted and only available 2nd-hand or through auction sellers at pemium prices. This 50-album Box Set (plus bonus interview CD with Wilma Cozart Fine, Mercury s producer) affords collectors an opportunity to acquire 50 classic recordings at a terrific price, in a box which may well become collectible itself.

Ingrid Fliter is a one-off, the kind of pianist we have not seen in years. She plays Beethoven with an old-master's touch and Chopin with reckless passion. (La Scena Musicale) For her third EMI Classics recording, Ingrid Fliter turns to three of the most passionate and powerful Beethoven sonatas with titles to match: Op. 13 `Pathétique', Op. 31 No. 2 `Tempest' and Op. 57 `Appassionata'. The iTunes bonus tracks are the Opus 33 Bagatelles Nos. 2, 6 and 7.

Fliter said recently, "Through working on Beethoven's music I discovered the man, the humanity he expressed in his music. He took his life and music -and his mission- very seriously. He was an extremist. He did not give any concessions or compromises. He was not afraid of showing himself as he was and as such made many enemies as well as friends, lovers and admirers. I am among the latter."

Reviewing a recent recital that included Beethoven's Sonata No. 18, Op 31 No. 3, Chicago Classical Review wrote, "Fliter brought not just a sterling technique but just the right sense of quirky humor and individuality to this music. Rarely will one hear the jocular side of Beethoven put across with such spirit, the dynamic contrasts underlined, and Fliter's light articulation bringing a vivacious Haydnesque wit to the music. [...] She also brought out the pensive side of the songful Menuetto and the rollicking Presto was aptly con fuoco making a rousing conclusion to a first-rate Beethoven performance."

Fliter is associated in many people's minds with the music of Chopin. She was the Silver Medal winner of the Frédéric Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2000, since which time she has performed his music extensively and made two critically acclaimed Chopin recordings for EMI Classics. Comparing the music of Chopin and Beethoven, she said, "Playing Beethoven requires a totally different approach than playing Chopin. Chopin is more about him. You are the interpreter, you create the sound and people receive the beauty from you. But Beethoven is all about him wishing to communicate with the world. He wanted to catch the sky, catch nature and be part of it. He was all about giving. And this is something I want to create when I play. It's not about me, it's about the music, it's about Beethoven."

Of the three Beethoven sonatas performed on this CD, only one was assigned its title by the composer. This was the `Grande sonate pathétique', composed in 1798 in Vienna and dedicated to Prince Karl Lichnowsky, a supporter who had introduced Beethoven to Viennese aristocracy. The sonata was composed at a time when Beethoven was becoming aware of his encroaching deafness.

Although Beethoven did not name his sonata Op. 31 No. 2 `Tempest,' there are unconfirmed reports that he thought of Shakespeare's play in connection with the music. Beethoven's only sonata in the unusual key of D minor dates from 1802, a dark period in his life and the year of his Heiligenstadt Testament, a letter addressed to his brothers "to be read and executed after my death". In it, he described his despair over the progression of his deafness, his rejection of suicide and his decision to "endure this wretched existence" for the sake of his work.

The name Appassionata affixed to Beethoven's Sonata Op. 57 was not chosen by the composer but is very apt as the work is passionate, dramatic and tempestuous. The title was chosen by the publisher in 1838, 11 years after the composer's death. The Appassionata was composed in 1804/1805 and possibly into 1806. It cost Beethoven a great deal of time and effort in the same period that he was composing the Eroica Symphony, the Kreutzer Sonata and the Leonora Overture No.2. Beethoven is said to have considered Op. 57 his greatest sonata until he composed the Hammerklavier in 1818.

Ingrid Fliter began her studies in her native Buenos Aires before moving to Europe to continue them in France and Italy. She won prizes at important competitions, including the Busoni Competition and the International Frédéric Chopin Competition. In 2005, Fliter became the fifth recipient of the prestigiousGilmore Artist Award, made every four years by an anonymous panel of judges who assess a number of pianists over a period of time without their knowledge. Age and nationality are immaterial. The winner must possess broad and profound musicianship and charisma and must desire and be able to sustain a career as a major international concert artist. Two of the four previous Gilmore Award winners were EMI Classics artists Leif Ove Andsnes (2002) and Piotr Anderszewski (1998). From 2007-2009, Fliter was on the roster of BBC's New Generation Artists scheme, through which she appeared with many of the BBC's orchestra and participated in prominent UK festivals.

Today Fliter divides her time between Europe and the United States. Recent and forthcoming engagements include the Philharmonia Orchestra (3 April at the Royal Festival Hall in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23), the Royal Stockholm, Rotterdam, Bergen, Royal Liverpool and Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestras and the Sydney and West Australian Symphony Orchestras. This season marks Fliter's International Piano Series debut at the Southbank Centre in London (7 June, 2011) with an all-Beethoven recital. She also looks forward to engagements at festivals in France, Spain, the Czech Republic, the UK and Japan.

Ingrid Fliter is an exclusive EMI Classics recording artist. When her first CD, an all-Chopin disc, was released in April 2008, The Telegraph wrote, "The warmth of her playing and the lyrical impulse of her interpretations are combined with discretion in matters of dynamics, pianistic decoration and tonal colour to make these pieces flow from her fingers with the spontaneity of someone deeply immersed in the music's idiom." Her second release, the Complete Chopin Waltzes, inspired strong words of praise from Gramophone: "Ingrid Fliter sets a new benchmark for the complete waltzes. From beginning to end, this is among the finest Chopin recordings of recent years... Each waltz emerges as if a great actress were reading a short story, each with its own colour and character. Fliter's `timing' is judged to perfection; her tempi are near ideal; she never loses sight of Chopin the poet or reinvents him as a red-blooded virtuoso"

Buy a Moped Scooter Online - And Don't Get Screwed!

!±8± Buy a Moped Scooter Online - And Don't Get Screwed!

It's Scooter Moped Time!  For most of the country, the weather is beginning to get mild, gas prices are going up again, you are trying to do your part to clean up the environment. So, What do you do? Why, you buy a scooter or moped of course. Buying a moped scooter online can be scary, but it doesn't have to be.

Let's clear up a few terms first. Most people interchange the terms scooter and moped. Actually, a moped is a pedal and gas powered bike that is under 50 cc's. What makes it a moped is the pedals. You can pedal start a moped or some of the newer mopeds also have electric starts. Mopeds use 2 stroke engines which means you mix the oil right in with the gas. Some states have a problem (California) with the 2 stroke engine. Some moped companies have started installing a "clean carb" that can pass California's stringent clean air laws.

Most Scooter's on the other hand, have a 4 stroke engine.  They are either kick start, or electric start. A scooter is a bit larger than a moped and you will need a drivers license to drive it.  Both scooters and mopeds have to be registered in the state that you are going to drive it.

That said, So, You want a scooter and you want it now!  It is very difficult to find scooter dealers in most parts of the country. That really leaves you to purchasing your scooter or moped online. I know. That can be really scary. It is a lot of money and you don't want to get screwed.  It seems everybody and his brother is selling scooters online. Throw in a Google search for motor scooters, gas scooters, moped scooters, etc... and you will come up with more sites than you can look at. Some of these sites are selling everything from moped/scooters to nail polish remover. Not what you want.

Here are a few tips on buying a moped/scooter online. First, check out a few sites. Dig through them thoroughly. Check to see if there is a contact page. No contact page, time to move on. Next, check out the scooters on the site. If you see something you like check to see if it is available. If it is, YEAH!! Don't get too excited yet. You have a lot more work to do. Check out the warranties offered on the scooters. Read all the information.  Remember, most of these scooters are coming from China. If you need warranty work, well you want your company to honor that. I don't think you want to pack up your scooter and send it back to China!  If the warranty policy of the site is buried and difficult to find, read it very, very carefully. Some sites do not honor the warranty themselves. They refer you to the manufacturer. This can be a nightmare!!  Check to see if the company carries parts for your scooter. Things do break and you will need to have replacement parts available. It is surprising how many scooter sites do not sell parts. Trouble, Trouble! Don't Order. Even if you think you have found the cheapest price on a moped/scooter. If you can't get parts, no price is worth it. Everyone loves to find a bargain, but a bargain sitting in the garage broken is not worth it. Save a few more bucks and buy a better scooter.

Check the site for information that you will need. How will your scooter will be delivered? Will you have to pick it up at a central delivery area? Will the driver help you get it off the truck? (Some delivery services are not responsible for getting it OFF the truck, only to get it to the end of the gate of the truck.)  A Moped Scooter weighs between 200 and 300 lbs. Most come packed in a large box. A little unwieldily for one person.  Some sites offer home delivery for about more than the regular delivery price. Might be worth it.  This is really important! No matter where your motor scooter is delivered-open it. Check every inch of it for damage. Your delivery service may not appreciate it but they do have to wait. Even if they scream at you, do not sign off on your scooter until you have checked it. If there is damage, you need to note that on the delivery paperwork. Get a copy.  If you do not check for damage before the delivery guy leaves, you are out of luck. Seriously, Do Not Sign Off On The Delivery Until You Check For Damage!! If there is damage, you will file claim with the delivery company. This is why it is so important.

Missing pieces, tech issues, should be referred to the company that you bought it from. Shipping damage, to the shipping company.

Check that the company that you are ordering your scooter from gives you clear directions on how to uncrate your moped or scooter, and how to put it together. Most mopeds and scooters require some assembly. Not much, and you should be able to handle it, but you will need clear instructions. Some sites even have videos right on the site that help you with assembly.

If you are new to mopeds and scooters, it would be a good idea to take a motorcycle safety class. After all, you would not turn over your car keys to someone who had never learned to drive. Above all, wear a helmet!! A full face helmet is the best, but if you don't want to do that, at least wear a smaller DOT approved (Department of Transportation) helmet. Remember, most accidents happen within the first few months of ownership.

One last bit of advice: Check out the company you are thinking of buying from at the Better Business Bureau online. You can learn a lot. There is one online scooter company out there that has an F rating. I don't think you want to deal with them.  It is always good to know what other people think of the company before you buy. I never buy from an online company until I have looked up their Better Business Rating. Remember though, just because a company doesn't have a rating, doesn't mean it's bad. It just means no complaints registered.

If you don't find any information at the BBB, check out the blogs and forums. If people are unhappy about a company, they will let you know.

Peace always. Be Safe. Never Drive When Drinking. Lock Your Scooter. Have Fun!
